Distemper/Upper resp vaccine

juliansmom Apr 07, 2004 03:14 PM

Is it necessary for a kitten to have a follow-up distemper/Upper resp vaccine? And what is the danger of giving a kitten a rabies vaccine? My kitten is 5 months old, but only 2.5 lbs. I just got him from the pound.

Usually the kitten inoculations for the upper respiratory (FVRCP) does need to be boostered or it won't be effective. Rabies isn't recommended for cats under six months, however your community may require it by law. You should check with the shelter to see for sure what if any shots were given. Also you may want to ask the vet to do a titer to see what immunities the kitten may have (he may have been vacccinated or may have picked up some immunities from his mother's milk.)

Generally vaccines are safe and effective. There is a type of vaccine called PureVax that is supposedly free of the additives that are implicated in Vaccine Associated Sarcoma.

Your vet will be able to help you determine when and what vaccines to give the kitten - 2.5 pounds seems small, but many kittens are actually smaller.

Good luck with your new friend!

You may want to check with the county/city you live in, especially regarding the rabies shot. It is not always required, and it may depend on if your kitten is an indoor kitten. Please research the rabies vaccine, as well. I just had my newly rescued kitten vaccinated for rabies on 3/26 and now he has a lump at the injection site and a larger lump below the inj site in the fleshy part of his back right leg. Going online I just found out about this vaccine (and some others) cause reactions and sometimes cancer in those that react to the vaccine. Please be informed. I'm on pins and needles thinking my sweet little one may have cancer because of my unknowing choice. My other cats have never had a reaction. Look up feline vaccines online to ck for specific ones and the reactions known.
