Over Weight Kitty

broadway Apr 13, 2004 03:41 PM

I have a spayed kitty, about a year and a half old. She is getting over weight and very lazy. She likes to play, but she seams to run out of energy or just loses interest too quickly to get a good amount of excersize. She is currently on Purina Indoor Formula, although I am thinking of switching brands, though Im not sure to which yet. I would put her on weight control/diet foods, but my other two cats don't need to lose weight, and they all eat out of the same dishes. Could anyone suggest what brand of food may be healthier, or less fatty? I was concidering Nutro or Feladae (Id never heard of this one until yeterday, but the guy swears by it) Any help would be appreciated.

Either Nutro or Felidae are excellent cat foods - however the trick will also be in feeding. Most vets are now recommending scheduled feedings instead of free-feeding. Initially you should feed at the recommended level for the cat's ideal weight. If the cat doesn't lose weight, then the vet should be called for advice on how much to cut back.

In selecting a good cat food look for human quality protien and avoid cornmeal since the thinking now is that is what is making so many cats overweight and diabetic.

Also see if you can increase her playtime a bit. Perhaps several short sessions every day. Increase them by only a minute or two a week or so, and you might find that she will play more willingly!

Good luck!
