fat belly cat

lanie024 Apr 19, 2004 07:57 AM

my cat is about 3 1/2 years old, and as far as i know, in perfect weight ( 10 lbs) but she still has a big belly... is that due to her spaying as a kitten or could she still be overweight?

thnx!

Depending on her basic size, 10 pounds could be a bit overweight for your cat. In general if your cat sort of bulges at the sides when you look at her from the top she is considered overweight. Some cat foods, especially the lite kind have a good picture on the package that shows normal, overweight and obese.

Next time you take the cat to the vet for an exam, get his/her opinion on whether or not your cat needs to lose weight.

Does her belly bludge out at the sides or is it that hangy skin underneath? My vet said the hanging skin is gentic.

I also have a mixed breed kitten who is just turning 1 yr old. He gets a little less than 1/2 cup of Iams Kitten food 1x a day. I do give him 1/4 of a small can of wet food at dinner time. He has developed a "fat pouch" which fills my hand when I reach under his belly. It feels like it has fluid in it, but I took him to the vet he said it was just a fat pouch. Am I overfeeding him or should I try to make him more active to work it off?

It probably wouldn't hurt to encourage the kitten to play more to help keep the fat down to a minimum. Obesity in cats is a health hazard just like in humans - making them more prone to diabetes and heart problems among other things!
