Blind Kitten! HELP!

emmykitty Apr 21, 2004 12:12 PM

Hi, I just rescued 2 5 week old kittens and one is blind! I think she isn't totally blind, but she is at least 90% blind. They are both going to the vet tommorow to be looked over and checked out, have tests done. Well, I am just a bit concerned about raising her. She is starting to recognize my voice, so when i call her name she turns her head and starts to walk to me. I try to also get her to follow vibrations by thumping my fingers on the ground whenI call her name. Her name is Snowball, and she is SOOOOO cute!

Well, she eats really well, I just started them on KMR 2nd Step mixed with Whiskas Cat Milk and water. She is not as playful as Sugar, her sister, but I expect that is due to her bad vision. She does sometimes play with Sugar, but she is very easily frightened if picked up, or surprised. Are there any tips or advice for raising a blind kitten? Will her sister help her learn things? Snowball hasn't yet peed or pooped in her box, in fact she tries to eat the litter! Sugar pees in it, but I haven't seen her poop and I havent found her poop.

Well, any suggestions will be super appreciated. Thanks so much!

Awww, that is so sad. Poor Snowball! How long have you had them? Where did they come from? 5 weeks is very young, it's good she has her sister to bond with. I don't really have any tips for you though, but your vet should be able to tell the extent of the blindness and tell you where to learn all about her special needs and how to adapt to them.
Have you kitten proofed your home so she doesn't run into things?
I would imagine (and I know nothing of blind kittens) that over time she will be able to memorize her enviroment, such as where the food and litter are, where furniture is, etc., and then will probably become more active when she becomes more secure of her surroundings. But you might want to start just one room at a time... Your vet will tell you much more.

Hi! I got them both 2 days ago, they were in this crazy ladies house and she told me they were 6 or 7 weeks, so I figured they were ready to go. Well, then I weighed each of them and called the vet and they said at that weight they are probably 5 weeks, unless they were malnurished. I have a pen set up for them, with their box and bed and water and stuff, but my bf's mom takes care of them all day so she feeds them and keeps them company. I am worried cuz Snowball has contact with several people, me, my boyfriend, his mom, his sister and 2 brothers. I mean, they are all very gentle and caring, but I just hope its not too much for her. They do not have run of the house, they are waaay too small for that! And my bf's mom has a Bichon Frise, who is mothering the kittens. The kittens LOVE her! Its so cute, and I think its really helping them to adapt. I am also worried because my bf and I are moving in a month and I just hope that wont traumatize Snowball! I am really anxious about the vet visit! I just want these 2 precious babies to become well adjusted and healthy cats. Oh the questions! The vet has no clue what he is in for! LOL!

You may have to stimiluate them to get them to go poop. If they haven't gone yet. Try rubbing their bellies with a warm cloth in circular motions. Anyway keep us updated. Check out some of the other forums also. Kittens is used some and general chat has a lot of people in and out.

Actually little Snowball will probably adjust more than you might think. Cats do rely on their senses of smell and hearing almost as much as sight.

She'll probably pick up some behavior clues from her sister. It is good that you are in touch with the vet - s/he will be able to answer your questions and concerns.

Good luck! Keep us posted about Snowball!
