Diet not helping overweight cat?

Jacksons_Mom May 21, 2004 11:14 AM

I have a very overweight kitty who also has asthma and is prome to getting diabetes if he doesn't lose weight. I was feeding him the Iams formula for 'large' cats, but it didn't help so Jackson's vet switched him to a prescription diet food. I also have another cat who is perfect weight, but the vet said the food would not cause him to lose weight. However, it has also not caused Jackson to lose any weight. I am feeding him the amount prescribed by the vet, but he's only lost half a pound in the year I've been feeding the diet food. Does anyone know if he will begin to lose additional weight with further long term use of the food? Along with the prescription diet I am slowly getting him to exercise more and he has become more interested in playing. Also, is obesity a common problem in British Shorthairs? Thanks in advance!

I would continue what you are doing and see how things are going in a couple of months or so. Weight loss can be very slow in cats but in your case perhaps it should be a bit faster. As your cat loses weight he may become more active which in turn will speed things up.

If he has not lost another pound in three months, then you should probably consult your vet about the situation!

Is he only getting the perscription diet food? Or does he get cat treats, human food.....ect? We give our cats, cat treats, and the vet said this should be included in the food count. Also, one of our cats sneaks human food if we leave it out after dinner.

Perscription or not, alot of "diet" foods simply don't work. They are too high in grains and carbyhydrates. I'd be willing to bet that if you switched to a high quality higher protein food, your cat would lose weight. Felidae and Wellness are both good choices. I've had good luck with Natural Balance and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, as well.
