My cat hasn't been fixed yet...and we are having a problem.

justmary441 Jul 29, 2004 01:51 PM

We got out two female cat's in October and they have been our best friends since. THey haven't been fixed yet and Beautiful has recently started to pee on my mother's bedding. Three times in the past week. My mother thinks it is because she has been in heat so much. BUt i had a different idea. My mom recently has started dating a man who comes over a lot. He hates cats and makes it quite obvious. I thought that maybe the issue of peeing on my mom's bedding was a territorial thing. If anyone has any insight on how to get her to stop peeing on bedding please let me know.

You should probably bring the cat to the vet. It could be a Urinary tract infection. Our cats peed on the carpet when they got sick. They try do to it in a place you will notice.
Also, the cats probably should be spayed soon. How old are they?
Between 5 and 6 months is a good age.

The cat needs to go to the vet for a check up ASAP. Urinating on soft things often means there is a urinary infection present.

If all is clear on the health front, then the problem is behavioral. You will need to take steps to retrain the cat to the box. Basically you need to confine the kitten to a room like a bathroom, or a large cage with only food, water, bedding and the litterbox. As she begins to use the litterbox consistantly you can expand her space. There is more information at this link:

You need to thoroughly deodorize wherever the cat has been peeing and pooping. Petastic is highly recommended as is Heaven's Own. It is the smell of the "accidents" that causes a cat to reuse the place.

Check into using Feliway, a spray that mimics the happy scent cats leave when they rub their check against something. You can get it from your vet or from Cat Faeries at http://www.catfaeries.com
If you visit the website, you will see a phone number that you can call and for a fee discuss your cat's problems with someone. The person who does this is very knowlegeable and it may be worth the $$ for you. Feliway is also available in most large pet supply stores. There is also a plug-in with Feliway that can help.

Finally, if all else fails, ask you vet about using an antianxiety medication such as Buspar or Prozac. These very often work, however the decision to prescribe them will rest solely with your veterinarian who will be able to monitor the dosage and side effects.

The simplest answer to this problem is shut the bedroom door with the cat on the other side. Second, spay the 2 cats! It could be both things bothering kitty. She is marking her territory and she doesn't like the man. And doesn't want his scent in "HER" bed. She wants her scent there. Next you will have to clean that bed, including the mattress. Strip all the bedding off and wash every bit of it, then get a good odor spray at the pet store and spray that mattress down. I use "Cat Spray and Urine Stain and Odor Remover" by Simple sloution. Leave the mattress uncovered until it is totally dry and then remake the bed and shut the door.

I totally agree. She doesn't like the man and she's marking her territory. Also female cats in heat do spray. I know because mine did. The solution is to get the cats spayed and keep the bedroom door shut. She'll probably stop spraying after she's spayed.

I know exactly what you're going through. My cat Lenny Skynyrd started peeing in the bed about two weeks ago while me and my fiance were sleeping. for seven straight days we were confused (and a little angry) because Lenny has never done any thing like this before and all of a sudden he was peeing on us in our sleep! So, we cleaned the beddings and put Lenny in a room by himself with only food, water, and a litter box. Yesterday, I had both of our cats spayed. We still made Lenny sleep by himself last night, but hopefully tonight we'll let him back in and there won't be any more "accidents".

i just wanted you to know that you're not alone! my cat did the same thing!

yes...my cat is fixed now and the problem has diminished. I bet it will be the same with your cat.
