Fish Flavors?

southernsunbryn Jul 30, 2004 01:20 AM

I don't like to feed my cats wet food because of the gas it gives them and the way it makes their poop smell, but when I adopted my baby, Pandora, she was underwieght and wouldn't drink enough water, so I gave her wet food for a few weeks. Of course it gave her the bad gas, but when I fed her tuna and salmon flavors the gas was unbelieveably bad, especially with the salmon. She had an accident (a few pee dribbles) on the floor after I fed her the salmon kitten food and even her pee had the horrible rotten salmon stench.

Strangly enough, the salmon flavor was her absolute favorite!

I stopped feeding her the fish flavors of the wet food, even though she liked them best. Soon, I weened her off the wet food altogether. However, (as you know if you've read my other posts) she would eat my older cat's dry food, but not the kitten dry food. I tried several different brands of kitten food to find one that might appeal to her. My latest attempt was a "fish and poultry" flavored dry kitten food, that I started giving her last night. She eats more of that than she did of the others I bought, but now she is having that horrible smelly gas again! Could it be that she is allergic to the fish flavors?

Also, why would she like the fish flavors the best even when they seem to make her so sick to her stomache?

I know what you mean about bad gas! I once had a cat that would stink up the room so bad, you would have to leave the room gagging. His name was Benny. I gave him to my mother and law and it cleared up! She loved that dang cat, and after he passed away, she got another one that looked like him and named him Benny II. lol. Benny II is still around, he's a freaking monster giant cat! Honestly, he's the biggest cat I've seen, it's startling every time I see him.
I only know that cheaper foods have alot of byproducts that can cause gas. You could try switching brands, that is, if you're not already using premium.
I'm sure your vet will have a reccomandation for what to feed her when you take her in on Monday.
Do you have a picture of Pandora? I'd love to see one

It is entirely possible that she is sensitive to fish flavoring. Sometimes that which we are sensitive to is that which we crave the most - for example if you've ever read about sugar "addiction" in humans it seems as if those who are super-sensitive to sugar seem to want it! Since she's going to the vet it would be wise to discuss her dietary problems - especially the gassiness.
