How fat is too fat for a female blood python to reproduce?

SoupFly Oct 13, 2003 09:55 PM

I have a female that is seven feet long and weighs about 35 lbs. when empty. She is absolutely huge! Last year she was about 5 lbs. heavier, and produced no eggs. Lots of breeding, but no results. I hope to try her again this year. She is a fantastic blood, and any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Howard.

I would say that she sounds like she is at her proper weight at 35LBs. Any thing bigger than 40LBs, could be considered over weight, and can hinder any breeding efforts. Also, just because there was breeding activity there might have been other factors that could contribute to a lack of follicles in the female and or lack of viable sperm development in the male: example no cooling period or separation of the pair prematurely.

Hello,

I was wondering if you could go into greater detail on how the lack of a cooling period for a female could adversly affect egg production. I have typically always cooled my pythons before introducing them for breeding, but this year I introduced two of my bloods before I cooled them. I put them together while I replaced the glass that had cracked on one of their cages. I didn't think they would breed but they hooked up almost immediately. Could this breeding result in problems down the road.

Thanks,
Erin
