How Do I Tell If Cat Has Been Spayed?

LKitsch Dec 11, 2004 11:10 PM

Someone gave me a 6-year old indoor only female. I never asked if she was spayed or not because I assumed she was. So, is there any way to tell? I have never had an intact cat, so only know the signs of a queen in heat from what I read, and assume I'd be able to figure it out, but are there other signs when she is not in heat? She seems a little on the dominant side, compared to my two other cats, who are both spayed and fixed, which made me wonder. On the other hand, she is overweight, but that could come from the fact she was not very active til she came to my house. Of course, I have a call into the guy who gave her to me, but til I hear back from him . . . . .

It is hard to tell if a cat has been spayed, even vets aren't entirely sure unless they do an ultrasound or x-ray. The scar from a spay is very tiny and hard to detect.

Some cats will display dominant behaviors even if they have been spayed/neutered. This is more than likely the case with your new cat. At this point your best bet is to call the former "owner" when you can and ask - or go to the vet and see if s/he can feel a spay scar.

I finally spoke to the former owner and she was spayed as a kitten. So, I guess I just have a tough cookie on my hands!
