Very Senior Cat Not Grooming - Advice?

sophiebugg Jan 27, 2005 08:18 AM

My cat, Sophie, is 20 years old and in okay health. She's got arthritis pretty bad and her entire lower spine is fused. She now no longer grooms herself. She frequently gets hair mats. How often should I bathe her? I want to keep her clean but I don't want to bathe her "too much". Also, can anyone recommend anything about the matting? She's a short hair cat, but her fur is incredibly thick, it mats like crazy and she's not very fond of combing. Thank you! Laura

Aw! What a sweet old lady you have!

There are special cleaning cloths that you can use on cats who don't groom well. This can help with things in between baths.

As for the mats, it is best to let a professional groomer deal with those. Many cats have been injured because their humans have tried to cut them out. After the cat has been dematted, there is a special mat brush that will help keep them from reforming. Talk to you groomer about this.

hi,
1 of my boys has hcm so i dont bathe him so as not to stress him out. i use the wipes which are basically a wet/dry bath. they work great. i know petco and pet smart carry them. im at work now and the name of them escapes me at the moment. its a wet bath without putting them in any water. check them out. glad to hear she is 20yrs old. she wouldnt have gotten to that age without the best care possible !!!
