18 Year Old Cat Under Weight

kendraes Mar 19, 2005 11:49 AM

My cat (Gidget) is 18. 4 years ago she had kidney failure but has been great since then. I feed her Hill's k/d dry food which she has always eaten well. I've always fed her a Tbls. of meat Friskies for breakfast and very little table food other than milk or cottage cheese on occassion. I had her to the vet the other day and she now weighs 3 1/2 lbs. She's always been a little cat but has lost way too much weight. The Vet said the k/d gives her nutrition but does not put on weight. I am to feed her meat food 3 x's a day. She doesn't like k/d meat so am giving her Science diet 7 . The problem is it's very expensive. Is there something I can make for her? Can I give her Half & Half for lunch? She doesn't have a lactose problem. Thanks!

The problem with half and half would be that it isn't a source of high-quality protein which is what Gidget needs. Kidney failure eats away at muscle and Gidget needs to add muscle weight, not fat. Have you disscussed this issue with your vet?

Ask your vet if you can try upping her Friskies meat at each meal and continue with as much Science Diet 7 as you can afford. I would hesitate to recommend anything without a vet approval at this point.

Best wishes to you and Gidget!
