diarrhea in kitten

lionpearl Apr 19, 2005 02:17 PM

Hi, I brought home a bengal kitten a little over a month ago and he has had a problem with diarrhea. Obviously I have taken him to the vet and we are trying him on feline i/d for a couple of weeks. I was wondering if any one else has experienced this and if it was resolved. I have never had this problem with a cat before. Thanks for any info. Lionpearl

Kittens very often have diarreah which can be dangerous because they dehydrate so quickly. However you seem to be doing all you can for him by taking him to the vet trying a different diet.

It could be he has IBS or food allergies and might need a very special diet - like duck and peas or lamb and rice. Ask your vet about these foods - usually they are prescription.

Good luck! I hope he gets well soon!

Hi,

Diarrhea in cats and kittens can have many different causes. Kittens especially have very sensitive GI tracts and something as simple as a sudden change of diet can cause diarrhea. If you haven't already done so, I would talk to the breeder and find out what she feeds her Bengals and whether this litter has had any particular health problems, including any medications they might have taken. Antibiotics are especially known for causing GI upset in cats and kittens.

Feeding I/D is a good starting point, as it is very easy to digest. Once the month of feeding the kitten I/D is completed, I would gradually mix it with whatever kitten food the vet suggests. You want to be sure to make the change in diet slow and gradual.

Please let the vet know if the diarrhea continues on the I/D. You want to make sure that your baby doesn't become dehydrated.
I am assuming that a fecal exam has already been done, but, if not, it would be a good idea. Some parasites can cause diarrhea.

Hi, thanks for your input it is appreciated. I did talk to the breeder and she was feeding him raw chicken and adult evolve, which is an all natural food. I knew about the evolve but thought it was kitten food she was feeding adult! I was surprized but tried it along with the chicken. My vet knew but at that point didn't say much. Well that didn't help the situation so I talked to my vet again and we are on the i/d thing. Also we have to be very careful for him to get no people food which my boyfriend wasn't being as vigilant as I was. So we will see and keep trying. He is gaining weight and is full of energy. I call him my little monster, lol. Lionpearl

So glad that you took him to a vet. Vets are always so much personal in these kinds of situations!

Do you have pictures of the 'little monster'? We'd love to see them.
