Diabetic Cat Food Question

humrz28 May 25, 2005 07:40 AM

My 13 year old cat has just been diagnosed with Diabetes. I've noticed that the food for Diabetic cats is not only expensive, but it helps them lose weight. The thing is, my cat needs to GAIN weight. He has lost so much weight the last couple months, he's skin and bones. Is there anything I can make for him that will help the glucose levels but at the same time help him put on weight? I currently feed him Purina One Senior Forumula (sensitive stomach). Maybe there is something I can mix with it? I'm just so confused and I'm having the hardest time finding any information.

Hi There,

The best diet for diabetic cats is one high in protein and low in carbs. You want to limit the carbs because they can seriously affect the blood sugar. In fact, some diabetic cats have been able to go off insulin on a canned-food-only diet, and many others have had their dosage of insulin reduced as a result of being on such a diet.

Your cat should gain weight as he is regulated on his insulin. Even though the carbs in dry food may put weight on him, they will make it much more difficult to regulate him. It can be a real challenge in a newly diagnosed diabetic cat anyway.

Please check out www.felinediabetes.com and www.sugarcats.com for more info.
