How do you guys clean your tubs of mealworms?

xelda Oct 13, 2003 10:09 PM

Well, after replenishing the gutload supply a few times, I feel like it's about time to clean out the whole thing and put in some fresh gutload. It's gross to stick my hand in there now, because I feel like I'm sifting through mealworm feces that's gotten mixed up with all the powdery gutload.

However, I've still got a good number of live mealworms still in there. What's the best way to go about with sifting them out from the gutload? Some of them are really small.

lay some apple slices on top and every hour or so stop in and shake them into a new container.
over the course of a day you should get almost all of the worms
I did that today actually and there were only enough left in the bin to feed my 3 remaining juvies

I actually poor the contents of the bin through my screen spaghetti collander - give them a little shake and all the debris runs through trapping the worms in the strainer. Of course, I want to buy a new screen collander and can't find them - why oh why must everything be plastic now a days?? the plastic holes are too big to do any good - the screen is perfect (sigh).

Good luck!!

I just got a screen colander for this very purpose. The screen is pretty fine, but still, with baby mealies in there, it's big enough to let some thru. Then I had to poke thru all that worm poop to find each and every one--can't bear to throw a good mealie away!

Got my screen one from a Marsh supermarket (in the midwest here). Next time I might just wait until the worms are a little bigger before I do it, but otherwise, it worked great.

Well here in cali, you can find them in a lot of places. I registerd this past weekend for wedding gifts. There were some of the screen collanders at Target, Bed bath & Beyond and JcPennys.
