Socket update

LisaG Jul 31, 2005 04:17 PM

Hello! Socket is now 9 weeks old. He is learning new things everyday (and so are we!). There are little things that we have to do that most people would not think about. For example: He has a two compartment tray for food and water and we have to keep the food on the left side or his face goes in the water! Also, we noticed that when we pick him up and carry him from the bedroom into the living room he will bump into furniture because he does not know what room he is in. When you call him he stops and "looks" at you and tilts his head to the side. He is such an adorable, lovable kitten. He has learned to get down from the couch or chair by going down backwards. It is sooooooo cute.
The vet is amazed at his progress and very glad he was not put to sleep. When Socket gets older and closer to his full grown size the vet will sew his eyes shut. That is it for now. Thanks for listening. Lisa

Is there a way of alerting him as to what room he's in? Like the room with the food dishes smells like roses, but the room that has his bed smells like oranges but the livingroom smells like lilacs. Cats have such a heightened sense of smell that it wouldn't much. What about , when he bumps into the furniture putting little scent stickers, some smell like bubblegum here and there on them right at his level so the first time he'll bump into the furniture but he will smell bubblegum, then next time he may bump into the same piece of furniture or another piece of furniture and again smell bubblegum but the third time he may just remember that when he smells bubblegum there's a obstacle right there and it will alert him beforehand. He may not have sight but all of his other senses still work, don't they? Work with those so he can make sense of his world.

Hello again,

Some other things you might want to try are.....if you have other animals, put a bell on there collars. That way Socket will know where they are. Spray pillow spray on his toys....you can get it at Bath and Body Works. It have a slight sent and will not overwhelm him nose. He will learn to jump up on things, Stevie stands on his back legs and feels the heighth with his front paws....then jumps. He still bumps into things but takes it in stride. He really likes the toys that are on a stick with a feather on one end. We put a bell on the feather end if it doesn't come with one. Stevie loves it and jumps in the air after it. Hope I have helped. You can e-mail me at londonmae@aol.com. I have lots more helpful hints if you would like them. It was really scary when we first brought Stevie home but now I can't imagine him not being here.

Hi,
You are in for a treat, I too have a blind kitty who is almost 1 1/2 years old. She is a joy and I couldn't imagine life without her. She is very well adjusted. I was worried about having a "blind cat" at first, but as she got older and amazed me the way she did, I realized I had nothing to worry about. She even chases bugs. Need I say more? Enjoy your blessing.
