Grooming a Himalayan kitten's belly

BNick Sep 01, 2005 02:45 PM

HI. I am new to this forum. I just found this site today. I have a Himalayan kitten, who is 16 weeks old. We got him when he was 10 weeks old, and my husband and I have groomed him every day since that time to get him used to grooming.

I have a 9 year old Himalayan female who loves to be groomed. We use the same method for both cats, but the kitten just hates to have his belly groomed. I'm sure that there is some way that it came be done so that it will be more enjoyable for him.

Does anyone have any hints? Thanks in advance.

This has me stumped completely! I know that many kitties don't like to have their belly touched because they feel so vulnerable, but I guess a Himmie would need some brushing in that area.

Can you try a gradual approach? Try touching the kitten lightly on the belly with the brush, then reward him with whatever is the ultimate cat treat. Then increase the "touch time" and finally start a gradual "groom time". This may take a year, but may be worth it in the long run.

Good luck! I hope someone else has a better idea than this!

PHMadameAlto:

Thanks for replying. I just starting using treats while grooming him yesterday. My vet didn't want him to have many treats before this because the poor little thing had coccidia when we got him, which caused him to have diaharrea. He's finally tested negative for the coccidia and the diaharrea is gone, so she thinks it's safe to give the treats now.

The treats did help with the grooming, but it is going to take time. The problem surprised me since my other Himalayan actually enjoys being groomed. She will just jump up on the table when it's time.

Oh, well, every cat is different, and he's a sweetie in every other circumstance.

Thanks again.
