Question about appropiate amount of canned food for weight loss

maitri13 Sep 25, 2005 05:28 PM

Just started my cat on Wellness canned, and not sure about the appropriate amount to give her. When she was on dry food(Innova lite) her recommended daily serving was about a 1/2 cup, which I split 3 times a day. This was for her target weight, which she has never achieved. I've been doing a lot of research and wet foods seem to be the way to go for weight loss. High in protein and low carbohydrate fillers.

The guidelines on the can are one can daily for an 8-10 lb cat. She currently weighs about 17lbs, although she is a big boned cat she should be at about 13lbs. That serving recommendation just seems like a lot. I just want to make sure that I'm not under feeding her.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your replies

You should try feeding the recommended dosages for several weeks, and then weigh you cat and evaluate the outcome. If she is losing weight then at this point you are doing well and should continue. If she's gaining, then you may want to cut back, but also contact the Wellness people via their website and see if they have any input. Also be in close contact with your vet.

Good luck!

Okay, i may be able to help you a little bit in finding out just how much your cat needs. First of all, what is your cat's weight? Second of all, is he an active/inactive cat? Thirdly, how many calories are there per can of your Wellness food? With this information i can do a pretty accurate diet calculation based on specific factors.
