Too late to neuter? Moving in 2 weeks!

eolive Sep 17, 2006 02:27 AM

So I have had issues with neutering my cat. When I brought him to the vet at six months old, they said one of his testicles had not descended yet so they couldn't do it. So it's been six months later (so he's a year now) and they JUST now popped!! I was petting him down to his tail the other day and noticed some little hard things under his tail! Yikes!

I also noticed some really strong odors around the house near his liter box. I am HOPING to god that it isn't spraying!

I am moving in 2 weeks. Should I wait to get him neutered where we are moving? (to the east coast, we live on the west coast right now).
Also, why did it take him so long to fully mature?
Is it too late to get him neutered? Will he hate me forever?

Hi There,

I personally don't think much of a vet that refuses to neuter a cat with an undescended testicle. Where I work we commonly neuter these cats. We even neuter cats with NO descended testicles. You have to go in and do an abdominal surgery, but it's very much like spaying a female. Not a big deal for a decent vet to take care of.

Hopefully your cat isn't spraying, but I have no doubt his urine is strong-smelling. I think I would do the surgery now, before he has to adjust to a new home. It is never too late to neuter a cat, BTW. He won't hate you, either. But there is a good chance that he may want to spray around his new home to mark it as his territory. There will be less chance of his spraying if the surgery is done now, however.

Regards,

The Vet could have and should have neutered your baby when you took him the first time however it is never to late. I would have it done before you move. He might forget about spraying if he is in a new place where he hasn't sprayed before. No, he won't hate you forever. All of mine are neutered and they didn't hold a grudge

Oh thank you so much to you both for your help! I thought that Vet was screwy!! My poor baby. That's the last time I get a vet out of a coupon book. Oh god, that sounds awful! haha
