Belle is large and in charge!

Kaseys412 Oct 27, 2006 12:46 PM

OOk.. it's no secret that my Belle is a bit of a porker, she likes her food. Since adopting Scotty, she has also been eating canned food, her and Scotty split a small can of fancy feast twice a day. I was at the pet shop this morning picking up puppy food for Sophie and I usually buy purina for the cats, but I was so impressed with the Innova Sophie eats, that I decided to check out their cat foods. I was thrilled to find a reduced fat dry food!! So.. though it is a tad more expensive, I know it is better for both cats, and I'm hoping it does help her weight. She turned a year old in June and she is over 15 pounds already.. and rapidly growing. She is a brat (they both are) so I'm still going to give them their canned food once or twice a day. I will update on her weight progress and their overall liking of the food. We all know any certain food can be the best of the best, but it isn't worth a dime if the cats don't like it. At this point I don't really expect her to lose weight, but my goodness she needs to stop gaining!

Good luck! Recommend gradually changing to the new food, mixing old food and new food together with more old than new up-front until you have more new than old by the end of a week or two. Switching foods cold-turkey can sometimes cause problems (diarrhea, etc.)

Just thought of something. Can't remember how old Scotty is (he is a kitten, right?)... Anyway kittens do best on Kitten Chow/food the first year. After that move to adult food. I don't recommend putting him on an adult diet food if he is a kitten.

HI.. yes Scotty is about 9 months old.. but they had him on adult food in the shelter so I kept feeding him what they fed him, also.. it's just about impossible to keep them from eating each others food.. it's a difficult situation because Scotty is young and thin, Belle is over a year old and VERY fat.. would it be better to just feed both of them kitten food until Scotty is old enough to go to an adult food? Belle won't even be 2 until June so I would imagine it wouldn't be bad for her... her weight is becoming a cause for concern though.

This is one you may want to run by your vet as Scotty is fairly young and you'd be restricting his diet a good bit for a kitten. I'd call in and talk to the vet...
