Sharpei/Turkey X Leo cross!!

Ok, maybe not quite...but try to tell this little fella that.

Here he is (back shot)

His brother:

These two are brothers. Looking from the top, you really couldn't notice that something odd was going on. In fact, when I first withdrew them from the incubator to put them on paper towels, I had no clue. I didn't want to handle either much - to avoid stressing them out. (still bits of debris from hatching - they had only just hatched)But, I went back in to check on them and noticed something strange on one of the babies (a wee bit smaller than his brother). The smaller baby didn't fit into his skin. He had folds (wrinkles)in several places, with a dewlap (turkey waddle)under his chin. It also loos like there is a bit of eyelid malformity - I will keep an eye on that. I do not know if this strange little tyke will survive, but he sure is cute (almost looks like he has a playboy bunny head on his back)

Temp spikes...a hazard to their health.

He sure looks strange. Was the brother incubated in the same container/conditions? Does the one with deformities eat and shed on his own?

I have a ‘special’ gecko too, and I think fluctuating temperatures were to blame. He has two deformed eyelids, and his right rear leg isn’t normal. If you look closely in the picture, you can see what I’m talking about. They may require a little extra care and TLC, but I know they can still live happy healthy lives.

Hey you know what, I think he may grow into his skin, if thats really whats wrong. You never know. If he doesn't eat or if he isnt acting right, you should take him to the vet and see what advice they can give you, or you can take him anyways, just to ask whats going on? Anyways all the advice i can give you. He is cute though!

Yes, they were incubated togther - the brother shows no signs of having been affected by the temps rise, I guess some are just stronger in nature than other babies, even an embryos.

He hasn't eaten or shed yet - It was maybe an hour or so after he hatched that I took the pics (he just hatched yesterday), so I will know more in about 5-7 days if he will eat or not.

If he survives, I'll keep everyone posted on his updates.

Laura-

Ohh, I feel so bad for that little guy.

Is that an offspring from the leo that you had with the eye deformity? I know you wanted to test it to see if it was genetic or from a temp spike? I was just curious.

I hope the little pulls through. Thats so sad.

No, those two won't be old enough to test until next season. But, I've been unable to find a male with the same problem. Even though I temp sexed these two to be male, the one with the posible eyelid problem has other issues as well, so I will need to find another male. Only if I use a male with the exact same problem will I ever breed them. They will not see a normal male unless they have a season with the same problemed male and pass the test. Only then can I be sure it was temp related and not genetic. With my new born I know it was temp related, I know how hot my incubator got - but with the older two being siblings and showing the same trait, I just don't know. But, since both of the older females have such deep , intense color, I am hoping it was from too high temps - because, at least in Trempers, the higher temps can make better color; maybe the same is true for all Leos - but the risk is apparent as well.

He's a cutie. I hope he pulls through without any serious problems.

Must have been as much wrong on the inside as there was on the outside.
I was hoping he woul dgrow up - I would have liked to have seen how he would have turned out.
I do feel for him. he was darling.
His brother was standing over his body guarding it. Either that or he was trying to make him get up. It was cute.
