Diet Question!

ownedbyjackjack Mar 28, 2008 04:12 PM

Hi all! I'm a fairly new cat owner. I have a gorgeous 4 year old DSH tuxedo cat. He's strictly an indoor cat (though the way he watches the birds out the window, I'm pretty sure he'll bust through the screen someday.) I have him on the Adult Science Diet now, but I've heard it has a bunch of fillers in it. I'm pretty new to all of this, so I'm looking for some advice. I can't afford thousands of dollars for food, but I can spend some money. Any advice? Thanks!

Hi There,

Welcome to the Board! I just love tuxies and my feline family contains 3 of these special babies

What I recommend is that you start reading labels on different brands of cat foods before making a decision on what to feed. You want the first ingredient to be some kind of protein, such as chicken, not a by-product of any kind. You also want to minimize grains or eliminate them from your cat's diet totally. Corn is often used because it's a very cheap filler but cats find it hard to digest. Some of the better foods contain brown rice or oatmeal which are much better for cats. Canned food is best because it is closer to a cat's natural diet, but there is nothing wrong with feeding some dry, or dry exclusively if that is what you can afford. I feed my cats a combination of both canned and dry and they are doing well.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Regards,
PHKitkat

I have been reading the labels of my cat food after reading articles about what actually goes into it. I am very upset that I spent years of feeding my cat (who passed over the bridge in March) what I thought was a good brand. But with our new cat I will definately be spending the extra money and reading labels.

Hi,
I feed my cats Natural Balance canned and Wellness Complete Health dry, just switched from Innova Evo dry for a change.
