5 week old can't keep food down; have to force feed

stroderode Jun 19, 2003 06:02 PM

My girlfriend and I have a kitten emergency. We have been given a five week old kitten who will not eat. We have to force feed her with a bottle, but she isn't able to keep it down. She loses it out of both ends immediately after eating. We took her to the vet, and they found no problems with her whatsoever. She ate a little at the vet (prescription science diet for kittens), but has refused to touch it since then (yesterday). She is getting weaker, has no interest in anything, whether it is food, water, or playtime, and is just skin and bones. She is about half the size of her brothers and sisters, and was healthy and fat not too long ago. PLEASE HELP! I don't think she has much time left....

I am sorry to say that we cannot help any more than a vet can. Something is very, very wrong here. Please take this kitten to an emergency vet ASAP.

I am emailing you a copy of this response because of the time element. Kittens can go downhill very quickly.

One thought, are you rubbing its hiney with a wet washcloth to stimulate defecation and urination? The kitten may still need a little help in this area.

Good luck and my **GLOW** for this precious baby.

thank you for the speedy response. I've been doing some research on the web and think it may be feline distemper. There are no 24 hour animal clinics in my area, and it is very laate here. She isn't having trouble with using the bathroom. She has diarhea, so expelling food isn't the problem. She just won't eat. Anything we give her, which doesn't amount to much, is coming out both ends almost immediately. Do you think it could be feline distemper? If so, what do we do?

Also, the vet didn't do any blood tests, although he checked for worms. She has no worms, so that isn't the problem. The vet was rushed and I don't think he did a very thorough examination.
Yesterday she was walking around a little. Today she only gets up to vomit or expel waste.

Thank you for the helpful support. Shevelle is much better now. I took her to a different vet the day after my last message, and he diagnosed her as anemic. We had to bring her mother in for a blood transfusion. It was expensive, but she is now healthy and playful, and very hungry. She should grow to become a normal, healthy, energetic cat.
Once again, thankyou for the advice.

Thank you for this happy update. I'm glad you got to the root of the problem and that kitten and mother are doing fine now!
