12 YEAR OLD CAT REFUSES TO EAT

NAB219 Sep 23, 2004 09:40 AM

A friend's 12 year old cat has not been eating for 4 days. He is receiving antibiotics for 4 days for an URI. Also a new member of the household, a kitten, recently returned from a 3 day overnite stay at the vet. Casey, the 12yr old cat, seems more active since being on the antibiotics. He is urinating. Casey has a history of constipation and usually has a BM every 3 days. Different foods have been offered to Casey but still no interest in eating. Normally he has a good appetite and weights over 15 lbs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It could be the anti-biotics are making the cat feel a little queasy. Please tell your friend to give the vet a call ASAP. There are things than can be done to get the cat to eat. And if the cat goes too long without food he could develop a serious condition called fatty liver disease which is life-threatening.

BTW, you might want to post on the Cat Health message boards for further insights and member feedback into your friend's situation.

Best wishes!
