My cat is not eating very much

briannescat Oct 24, 2004 12:27 AM

I took my cat to the vet about 2 weeks ago to get his fur shaved because he was very matted. We do not normally take the cat to the vet because in the past he has been very angry. He does not like other people besides me and my family. But to us he is very friendly and playful. Anyways, he has not been eating regularly at all. He will eat a little bit a day only. And when he first got home he would not go to the bathroom in his cat box. He went in other places in the house. It took probably 4 days untill he would go in his box again. And that was after buying extra boxes and putting them through the house. He used to be hungry at 4:30 every day and meow till you fed him. Now he sleeps and lays around alot. When i bring him food, he will sit there and just eat a few pieces. What can i do?? It was a big ordeal to take him to the vet and i do not want to have to do that again because they had to knock him out with alot of drugs because he gets so angry. Any suggestions???? Please help!

Sounds like he is mad at you. What are you feeding him? dry food? Maybe you can get him to eat by buying a few cans of wet food. At first just give him the wet. Then after he is eating that, starting missing in it with his normal food. Then eventually cut out the new food all together.

Hey thanks for your help. I do usually feed him dry food so i tried giving him wet food. He ate a few bites and seemed to mostly be licking it. Then he just walks away and goes and lays down again. I dont know maybe he is just getting older too. He is about 7 years old now. Any other tips??

It sounds like something is not right with the cat. Since he doesn't like going to the vet, you should call the vet first and ask for some advice. The fact that he seems to be lethargic and tired indicates a potential problem. I think it is more than just being upset about the previous vet visit. Hopefully your vet will be able to guide you about whether this is serious or not.

I also think it is something more serious because he has really only eaten a few pieces of food a day. Also he just puked up yellow and white foamy looking stuff. So i called the vet and they said they will call back after they talk to the doctor. Im scared for my cat and hope he will get better. But he has gotten really skinny so i think they are going to tell me to bring him to the vet. He is not as fiesty as normal so maybe he wont be there either. thanks for the advice
