Update on Tiki's renal failure/appetite

ponygal1129 Mar 17, 2005 07:00 PM

I posted about my cat (18 yr old Tiki)being diagnosed with renal failure and her not eating anything. This is her 3d day on antibiotics and last night was her 2nd dose of IV fluids (vet gave me a bag to do at home.....under the skin method).

I was pulling my hair out trying to come up with ways to tempt her into eating. On my way out to work this morning I decided to keep her shut in the bedroom (I have 2 other cats and during the day I have to assume they were the ones eating whatever food I set out in her bowl, the greedy little pigs! LOL). I figured that maybe she would pick at the food over the course of the day and get a little more into her than she had been. I left a bowl of dry food and a small taste of canned.

I spent the entire day on the verge of tears and hoplessness. I talked it over with a coworker who loves animals as much as I do. She told me that maybe Tiki's refusal to eat anything was her way of letting me know that the end was near. That I should consider taking her to be put down rather than have her starve herself to death. But I wasn't ready to give up. I went to Wal Mart and got baby food and baby spoons to feed her. I got some vitamin drops to add to her food. I stopped by Pet Smart to pick up a tube of the paste that people recommended.

I get home only to find that the cat had EATEN EVERYTHING!!
I was so relieved that I started bawling like a little baby....hugging her and thanking her for eating.

I know she will not be around forever. At 18, I know she may not be around for more than a few years, if that. But darn-it....I just KNEW deep down inside that she wasn't at the end of her rope. I know my cat well enough to know that she still has some fight and life left in her.

Sorry for the length, but I am so emotional right now that I have to share it with someone or I may burst!. Thanks for listening!

Heather

I am happy to hear that Tiki is doing so well! This exact same thing happened to me with my cat Daisy - she would stop eating and I'd take her to the vet for fluids and antibiotics and she'd perk up for months! I think I bought her at least three to four years of life!
