not eating much

jaywest Mar 19, 2005 01:45 PM

Brought Ben home today after being in the hospital for 2 1/2 days on fluids and giving extra potassium. He does nave renal failure but seemed to be doing much better. His head was hanging down and walking unsteady when I brought him in and now actually he is back to normal. The doc did give him a steroid injection. Even though I have read that isn't a good idea, it did help. It may be only for a short time though. Doc isn't ruling out neurological things. All his other xrays turned out ok. His blood work showed all his levels are back normal. He is on k/d and a/d. Adding some potassium in his food or under his tongue. I just want to know if anyone can give me any info on something to try to make him eat. He did eat at the doctor's. He just isn't eating enough to me. I have been researching and reading and it is poss. that he just feels nauseous and that could be why. He acts like he is hungry. I just to get him to eat anything that is healthly, he is 17. I don't want his levels going wild again. I read about baby food being given, what type of baby food, does anyone know. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks Lil

Hi..this is Heather and my cat was going through a lot of the same thing your was. I did end up trying the baby food (canned chicken and turkey) mixed with a little canned kitten food (she was turning her nose up at the adult canned food). I also have been adding a kitty vitamin to it and a teeny bit of olive oil. She seems to be more alert now and her coat is starting to look less shabby. She's still extremely boney, but I guess it will take more than 3 days for her to put her weight back on.

Good luck with everything!!! My prayers are with you and your kitty!

Talk to your vet about some anti-nausea drugs for Ben.

Any baby food meat is OK, although it does need to be supplimented with commerical cat food since baby food lacks taurine, an essential nutrient for cats. Be sure there is NO onion in the baby food - most brands don't have it, but a few do. Read the label carefully!
