First Time Cat Owner...Kitty Not Eating...

OllyesMommy Mar 29, 2005 03:40 PM

First of all, I'm 20 years old, live alone away at school and just got my first cat of my entire life 2 months ago from a shelter. Recently, in the last day or two, he hasn't been eating. He's been drinking, but not eating. He also has been his usual playful self. I took him to the vet this morning. They did a fecal test which was negative. They also did a FeLV test and that was negative. The vet said that he's alert, just not wanting to play or do anything. He also got all of his first round of shots today. Since we've gotten home, he's just layed around. He doesn't even want to get up to walk around, just lay. I've given him hairball remedy because my mom told me that he might have a bad hairball and that'll help. He hasn't used his litterbox at all today either. The vet told me that if he isn't eating by tomorrow, to call and bring him back in. But, I'm worried sick now! Someone please ease my mind! They also de-wormed him while I was there, just to make sure of any parasites. What else could be wrong with my baby?

I think you are right on target here - I'm not sure from your post how long your kitty hasn't eaten, but since the vet is actively involved you have done all you can for him at this point.

Shots do take a kitten down a bit and perhaps this is what is ailing him. By all means if the kitten doesn't eat tomorrow, give the vet a call. More than likely it is from the shots and tomorrow he will be up and bouncy again. If the kitten shows signs of acute distress - difficulty breathing, heavy panting or total unconsciousness - get him to an emergency vet ASAP. Otherwise give his little body time to recover!

Good luck! Let us know what happens!
