12 year old cat won't eat after ruptured ear drum

Cherries Sep 28, 2005 02:19 PM

Hi,

I have a 12 year old male cat that refuses to eat. Last Wed, we took him to the vet for GI problems and she told me it was parasites. Then she proceded to clean his ears; in the process, she ruptured his left ear drum. We had him home from Wed to Sun then we took him to the emergency center because he wasn't eating. He's intersted in his food, but he won't swallow it. He's been in the emergency hospital since Sun and we are now Wed; and they're at a loss, they're going to up the dosage of anti-inflamatories and giving him appetite stimulants and IV, hopefully that will get him to eat.

Please get back to me as soon as you can.

Hi,

Your cat may be dizzy and/or nauseated because of the ruptured eardrum, as this may cause his equilibrium to be off. He may need something to settle his stomach, such as Reglan.

Something like strained meat baby food (without onion added) or canned A/D may be easier for him to eat than regular food. Do you know if the vet has tried either of these?

Also, if the antibiotics are being given orally, they may be adding to your kitty's discomfort, especially if they are given on an empty stomach. I am hoping that they are force-feeding your baby after all these days of him not eating.

I will be thinking of your kitty. Please keep us updated on how he is doing.

Regards,
AshleyElla

Poor kitty. AshleyElla has given you excellent advice. Keep trying to tempt him with tasty, smelly treats.

Let us know how he does.

They're giving him anti-infamatories, anti-biotics and until recently, appetite enhancers, through IV. But, i just came back from seeing him and I brought all of his favorite foods (I feed him Natural Balance) his favorite treats and cat nip. He WANTS to eat...he burried his face in the bag of food and he was going to tear it apart. So I gave him a treat and he started chewing it but you saw that he was having trouble, then he spit it out. I think that his jaw (or somewhere around there) is in pain. I bought him Gelsemium (homeopathic) and I gave them my Rescue Remedy (Bach Flower Remedy) to give to him. This is my last option before they might have to put in a feeding tube...which is something that I would REALLY like to avoid. They'll be force feeing him tonight because lipidosis is a concern at this point.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks

You may have hit the nail on the head when you say he might be in pain. The ears, sinuses and jaws are all connected. Perhaps you could discuss with your vet about the possibility of major anti-pain medication in his case.

Good luck. Keep us posted.
