8 month old itten not eating or drinking

delsol79 May 01, 2006 06:20 AM

My 8 month old kitten Biscuit got sick last Friday evening after I had left for a weekend trip. My sister tells me he started vomiting, then he had diarrhea an was very lethargic. He has stopped grooming himself. When she was able to reach me yesterday, I took him to a vet, and was told it could be an infection (he has a high fever) it could be a blockage, he really doesn't know. I changed their food to a different brand before I left, his brother a littermate is normal. The vet gave me amoxicillin for the possible infection and fever, which he soon vomitted after I gave him some this morning, and anti nausea pills, what do I do? Should I force feed him? And what formula brand should I give him?

Your kitten is still very sick - sometimes the anitbiotic causes an upset stomach. Young cats can dehydrate very quickly - you should call your vet or an emergency vet ASAP after reading this if the cat is still lethargic and not eating. He needs immediate medical care!

Hi,

I recommend taking Biscuit to another vet, one who doesn't just send home a cat that may have a blockage. An intestinal obstruction is a very serious thing and your kitty should at least have been hospitalized for observation. If he's obstructed, the last thing he needs is to be force-fed, and as MadameAlto already stated, dehydration is another important consideration.

Please don't wait. Take your baby elsewhere where he will get the diagnostic tests and care he needs.

Please keep us updated.

Thank you very much, the both of you for your advice. I'm taking Biscuit back to the vet today (a different one) All of his tests came back okay. The vet figures he did swallow something. On the upside he has stopped vomiting and is drinking water, he has also become active again, almost like his old self. I didn't sleep much last night because he was walking all over me and kept rubbing his face on mine waking me up. Compared with the previous two nights where he just slept at the end of the bed the whole night. I'll keep you posted on Biscuit's situation, and thanks a lot for your help.

Biscuit is completely back to normal, maybe it was some sort of infection, he is just as playful as always and has even gained a little weight, he and his littermate are back to running the house. I gave him the antibiotics for the full ten days and he's doing great. Thanks everyone.
