EEK! Advice on minor first aid, please (long -ish)

el_toro Oct 13, 2003 11:13 PM

I got home from work and as I approached Arthur's cage, there was blood on the glass walls (small heart attack!!!!). It wasn't as bad as I feared - she has a small ding on the heel of her left front foot, like if you bang your knuckle on something and lift a little divot of skin. She'd apparently spent the day glass dancing, though, and it looked like the set of a horror flick.

It was no longer bleeding, but had a bit of sand stuck to it. I washed the blood and sand off of her face, chest, and foot (she made quite a mess glass dancing), but I can't tell if the foot is swollen or not. It doesn't appear to be. I dabbed a little Neosporin on the boo-boo, blew her dry, and put her in a bare tank with no sand. No idea what she did - she was already in semi-quarantine because she's finishing treatment for coccidia. I have to take in a fecal sample for a follow-up before she gets to go back to her real cage. There was nothing in the cage to cut herself on - I can't figure it out! No furniture except a paper bag to hide in and a small dish of lentils.

Anyway, long story short (too late), I'm asking for recommendations for treatment of this little ding, so it won't get infected or something. I've seen people use neosporin, so I felt pretty safe doing that. I can call the vet tomorrow, but he's more familiar with iguanas than uros. Thanks for any advice!

Hello you - long time no see. It's your bearded dragon friend in Keizer! I saw your post and had to reply. I hope Arthur is better. I think the Neosporin is perfect for her wound. As long as it's kept clean and off of sand or any other substrate that could irritate it - that should work fine. That's what I use on my bearded dragons.

Well, I finally got a Uro. I met Dr. Douglas Dix of Deer Fern Farms at the Puyallup, WA Reptile Expo last weekend. He picked out a gorgeous orange Saharan Uro for me. We named him Houdini. You'll have to come take a peak at my website, I've added a bunch of stuff to it and also a page on Houdini.

Also, if you wanted to call Douglas Dix, he would be more than willing to help you with Arthur's wound - even though you didn't get her from him. His phone number is (360) 435-2679 and his e-mail address is douglasdix@deerfernfarms.com.

Good luck and please let me know how Arthur does with this. Have a great day!

Veronica

P.S. The handsom Uro in the photo below is Houdini.

Thanks for the reply! I'll keep you posted on Arthur's boo-boo. How exciting that you got a Uro!!! You'll love him! I can't wait to see him! I also saw your new birthday beardie on your site - he's gorgeous!! My compliments to JoelR.

I was also at the Puyallup show (Sunday afternoon), though it was a weird thing: I was planning a trip to Seattle and didn't know until right before I went that it was the same weekend as the show. Glen said I can have another uro (hurrah!), so I'm hoping to get one at the Hillsboro show as long as Arthur is over the evil coccidia. I'll find out by Friday. (can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!)

Torey,

Sorry to hear that Arthur has coccidia. That could be the reason she hasn't been eating much or doing much lately. Glad you got that straightened out. Don't forget the probiotics.

That's great that you're going to get her a friend. If you quarantine the new Uro for a few months then it shouldn't be a problem if Arthur has coccidia. Just a thought. I always quarantine all my new animals for at least 3 months. It's a pain, but it's well worth it. There are so many diseases, parasites, and bugs like mites that are easily spread from one reptile to another.

I'll be at the Hillsboro show on Sunday afternoon, probably between and 4. If you're there on Sunday I'll look for you. Have a great day!

Sorry, but I breed lizards myself and I get calls and e-mails from people about their lizards they got from someone else and I answer them but I also resent them doing this because I also have a job and three kids and I only have so much time (and I do answer questions on forums like this when I can, but I feel people shouldn't expect me to take care of their lizards problems at their convenience when they didn't get the lizard from me). Please don't call Doug Dix about this lizard problem. It is probably a minor problem and if it isn't you need to take it to your vet. Neosporin or other over the counter antibiotics are fine, I agree. Sometimes if it is a wound I worry about not healing well and getting substrate in it I use that artificial skin liquid bandage stuff on my lizards. It smells awful when you put it on so let it dry away from their cage. It has worked well for me with some pretty major wounds back when I had some baby beardeds that were eating each other's toes and worse! (it was a genetic problem, not a husbandry problem as I don't have them doing that now...this is something people have debated but don't let me get on my soapbox about THAT ONE).

Thanks, Lucy for the input. I was definitely not planning to bother anyone like Doug Dix for a little bitty cut. I'm not even planning to take her to the vet unless there's signs of infection. Poor thing is having a rough time lately and I'm trying to minimize stress. I mostly just needed to know the best things to do at home - should I use antibiotics? should I leave it alone? should I use some freaky herbal tincture or compress? and on and on.

I appreciate that you're standing up for your (and other breeders') right to have a private life! And I also appreciate that you take the time to try to help people anyway.

Thanks!
