sneezing

tiger2 Nov 22, 2003 09:51 PM

Hi! I am new to this so be gentle!! I just adopted a kitten from our local humane society. I took him to the vets the day after I got him and she asked if there was any sneezing or runny nose, of course at that time there wasn't. I did tell her that he won't eat or drink. Now 3 days later he has been sneezing, has a runny nose and is sleeping alot. Still not eating, but I did buy some of that kitty milk and he will drink that. I have heard about that kennel cough, but he doesn't have anything coming out of his eyes. Any advice on what to do or what this could be? I did try the vet today, however they were closed!

hi, congrats on the new kitty!

the lack of eating is an issue of concern. Try some baby food, the stuff that's just meat and water, most kittens love that.

I don't know if this warrants a visit to the emergency vet or not, hard to tell. He may not eat because his sense of smell is off due to sneezing, or he may just be freaked out about the new place. If his breathing is a bit wheezy or his temperature is up, i'd definitely take him to the emerg. vet. Kittens can crash quickly. Normally the sneezing just indicates he picked up the herpes virus (about 90% or more cats have been exposed to this virus in their lifetime). If that's the diagnosis, they just give an antibiotic to prevent a bacterial infection, you keep the kitty warm and hydrated, maybe have a humidifier/vaporizer going and nurse them thru it.

basically I'd trust my gut. If he looks or sounds bad, then off to the emerg. vet. Others might offer different advice.

good luck to you both,

Lisa S.

The sleeping and the lack of appetite are worrisome. If he is still this way and you read this before Monday morning, call the emergency vet and ask their opinion. Definitely contact a vet on this ASAP Monday!

Good luck to the new baby!!!
