Sudden and severe itching and loud meowing

wamydia Dec 30, 2003 03:16 AM

A few days ago my 1 1/2 year old cat, Starla, suddenly started acting very strangely. She began meowing very loudly at all hours of the day and night and for several minutes at a time, which is something she has never done before. I thought at first that she was sick or had swallowed something, but last night I noticed that she is itching very badly. She scratches herself, rubs against furniture, wiggles her butt, and meows continuously for twenty and thirty minutes at a time. When I help her by scratching or brushing her, she behaves as if this is the greatest relief she has ever experienced, sticking her rear up in the air and sort of kicking her back legs at the same time. She seems to generate an excessive amount of dander when she is itching, which is something she has always done when stressed. She has also been licking around her tail area alot. She is an indoor cat and has been spayed for almost a year. The only recent thing that has happened to her is that she was introduced to my family's dogs about five days ago. I am thinking that she may have picked up fleas or is having some kind of delayed reaction to stress -- her odd behavious did not begin until at least two days after the visit with the dogs. I have treated her with flea powder in hope that this will help. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I will take her to the vet if she doesn't settle down soon, but I would be glad to avoid the charge for the office call if anyone has any ideas!

aww, your poor kitty. well keep scratching her but i think since you mentioned the dog thing that maybe she did get fleas. and who knows maybe she is allergic to dogs! as for the dander thing... they do have spray type of cleaners and moisturizers at pet stores. I think they can help her skin alot, which will help the iching. plus if she is irritated from fleas maybe one has some aloe in it. check her closely for fleas, do the powder thing and find some spray, but maybe put it on after a day or so of flea powder first. If she's still the same in a few days then I'd take her to the vet. Good luck! Kisses and hugs to your itchy kitty.

I have heard that a spay hasn't taken before. Maybe it's some odd thing where the spay did't take and she has gone into heat. It's probably something to do with fleas, or dry skin. But just wanted to mention that I have heard of spayes not working.

I recommend a vet visit ASAP. I am very concerned that she may have a urinary blockage that is causing the itching. Check to see if she is urinating normally. If she seems to be straining then she needs a vet or an emergency vet right away. Also if the meowing seems to be worse, then also get her in right away.

If she is peeing OK, and the meowing isn't any worse, then it probably isn't an emergency and can wait until regular office hours. But she does need a check anyway. The other thing it could be might be a spay that didn't take like what was mentioned in another answer.
