I have a 1 1/2 year old Maine Coon (Max). About a month ago, I noticed a red spot around his neck which turned into a scab. I thought he got scratched by one of our other cats while playing. A couple of days ago, I noticed a red hairless spot on the top of his head; similar to the one about a month ago. It doesn't look like a cut, but I don't know what it is. Is this a staph infection? Or some other skin condition? Or a bacterial infection? HELP!!! Thanks for your info!

The cat should probably be seen by the vet. It could just be something that irritated him that he's scratched open, but it might be a parasite or an allergy. Let us know what the vet says!

I took Max to the vet, and all of the prelim tests we inconclusive. She took a culture of the sites and gave me a medicated shampoo. She also gave me some antibiotics, in case its an infection. The good thing is that Max hasn't lost his GREAT personality at all through any of this. The vet said that's a good sign. We go back in two weeks for the culture results!

Did the vet check for ring worm? Scabs and round patches have hair missing makes me think of ring worm.
