Drastic Weight loss despite healthy appetite, but seems healthy!

flyfish29 Mar 29, 2004 09:24 PM

Junior is a very active indoor cat who seems very healthy. He used to be overweight at 11.9 lbs 2 years ago but now is down to 7. Two years ago he started losing weight slowly and had bouts where he ate very little for a short while (we thought the weight loss and lack of appetite was due to stress of our first baby starting to walk) but in the last 9 months the weight loss has been more significant despite eating much more for the last 14 months. He weighed 10 lbs June 03 but 9 months later he is now 7 lbs. There is no weight left to lose as he is skin & bones. He has a great appetite and drinks lots of H20. His litter box is very “active” with hard stools and plenty of urine.

His diet used to be Iams but 6 months ago we tried a high calorie moist food (which he struggled to keep down- something he has ALWAYS had difficulty with is keeping down moist and even some dry foods and snacks.) We ended up with Kitten chow thinking it was high in calorie and something he was keeping down. He rarely used to get into people food on the counters, but recently is all over most any food on counters like he is starving, despite having food in his bowl and belly.

We have done a CBC which tested regular except for ALT which was high at 345U/L (range given was 12-130) Three weeks later ALT was still high, but lower at 205 U/L.

Slightly high were the following:
GLOG 5.24 G/dl (range 2.80-5.10)
GLU 150 mg/dl (range 76-145) three weeks later it was 121 mg/dl
CHOL 230 mg/d. (range 65-225)
Stool sample came back normal for worms.
Both the T3 and T4Free(done 4 months later) thyroid tests came back normal as well.
I am trying to avoid invasive tests (due to very high stress during vet visits for him and high cost to us) so our vet tried some meds for assimilating??his food (Viokase) Junior vomited it up within 10 minutes. I tried first in pill form, then ground up and sprinkled lightly on food, then a few grains in water in a dropper. He thew up every time. My vet has no clue what it could be. He lists many things but doesn’t see any as a high potential to be “it”.

My vet mentioned a possible protien allergy of sorts. He rec. trying him on Gerber lamb for a few weeks and see if weight starts coming back on. Saying something about possibly being alergic to something in his food and the viokase meds?)

Something I was reading about was Fatty Liver Disease? could it be this?

My vet mentioned many other tests but I could not get him to say which test he recommended next. He just kept listing tests saying things like...well it could be___ and then it very well could be ____.

Please help!

John

I don't think the cat has fatty liver disease if he is eating normally - which he seems to be doing at this time.

Since the cat is under the care of a vet, you have done the most important first step. Unfortunately if no obvious cause presents itself your vet has no other choice but to try more invasive testing. It is sort of a case of hit/miss.

From reading what you have written, your vet seems to be top notch - especially in regards to trying the food out for a food allergy.

Have you posted this under the "Ask the Holistic Vet" folder? I would urge you to do so. There is also a veterinary help line from Cornell University, although it costs 45 dollars to do so. The number is 1-800-KITTYDR.

I hope you can get to the bottom of what is wrong very soon. Poor baby. Even though he seems to feel well, it is obvious something is going on!

I am wondering if it is an allergy to some sort of food would that cause his body to not put on any weight and would we see other symptoms.

Update: He ate two jars of Gerber Lamp with gravy and loved it. He hasn't gone to food like this every. He actually kept it down so I am going to try this for a couple of weeks and see if any weight gain while I explore my other options as far as testing goes. He gets so stressed out when visiting the vet. He had a terrible expereince 8 years ago when a vet tested for a blocked tear duct...and the corner of the testing strip got jabbed into his eye by accident. He was awesome at the vet until that day and he has never been the same since unfortuantely. It is hard work to even get a vet to be able to examine him closely.

Another question: Would it still be possible that it is thyroid despite both tests coming back negative?

Do you have a gut feeling as to what test to do next? My vet never would settle on a test.

Thanks for your help.

Your cat needs an element called taurine not found in baby food. See if you can slip him some cat food which is enriched with this element.

If your vet is uncertain what test to run next, then perhaps it is time to get a second opinion. If this is not possible check for feline diabetes, liver function and/or HIV/Feline Leukemia (if the cat goes outside or has been in contact with cats who go out.)

Good luck to you. Keep us posted about the kitty's progress.

Do I need to put tayurine in it if I am only trying this for two weeks? I am afraid to try other cat food in the test period as it may be something he is allergic to if indeed he is allergic to something.

It seems as if he might be gaining a little weight, but hard to tell and I won't know til I weigh him next week at the vet, but my unnofficial weighting at home seems positive. Will keep you updated. Thanks.

You could give the taurine a miss for two weeks, but check with the vet about this for any longer length of time. There are some suppliments that can be prescribed that will replace that nutrient.
