Kitty's front leg is swollen!!

PhunkyJess2k3 Jul 05, 2004 02:38 PM

Last night, I was petting my 1 year old great cat, Spooky-Shadow and noticed her front legs were 2 very different sizes. I see her and play with her all the time, so this must have been new since I hadn't seen it before. The right front leg is swollen about twice the size of the left. I felt around, it was a little hard, but when I felt the bone I didn't feel any breaks or obvious fractures and she wasn't in pain when I was touching it. Later on the night, the swelling appeared to be slightly less, but from her elbow down to her paw is all blown up and I don't know why. My husband and I are in a horrible way with money right now and really can't afford a vet visit. If this can be treated by us, that's the way, of course we won't deny her of medical attention if that's the only way to help her. I can take some photos and send them along if need be, but I don't know how to post a photo on this forum. If anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to help my kitty, PLEASE respond or email me at NoJumpsNoGlory@aol.com. I held her leg against an ice pack last night for about 15 minutes, I don't know if that will help for a cat, but that's what I would do for myself. Please help me help Spooky!

It is impossible for us to tell what's wrong, even from a photo. It could be a simple sprain from jumping off something and landing wrong or a reaction to a spider or other bug bite or any number of other things. No vets monitor this board, either.

If the swelling persists I think you really need to consider a trip to the vet. Good luck and keep us posted on how she's doing.

Does it feel warm? It could be an infections from a bite. Is she an indoor outdoor kitty? If the swelling hasn't gone down I would consider a trip to the vet.

Spooky is doing a lot better! There was no heat in her leg, I checked for that, I basically treated her as I would treat my horse if his leg was swollen. The swelling lessened yesterday in a huge way and today both legs look the same. She never had any pain from it, just the swelling that has now gone down. I don't know what it was, but it doesn't seem to be anything now. I will still have the vet check that out, my husband and I will be taking her in just as soon as we get paid. She hasn't been to see the vet since we've owned her. She had been spayed and had her shots before she was given to us in December.

Spooky is an indoor only cat, so are my other 2 cats. The swelling is completely down today, no signs of it at all and still no pain from her. I have noticed that she has been scratching a lot lately, she seems pretty itchy. Even though she never goes outside, I know there's still a chance to fleas or insects, I haven't heard of any animals here in Nevada suffering from fleas though. It is possible I suppose though. I'll have to check with the vet.
