Argh! Fleas

ginevive Jul 18, 2004 08:01 AM

Hi, I am new to your forum. My spoiled, much-loved kitty Inky has fleas. We got him nearly two years ago from the local spca; he is now a 6-year old neutered male, claws intact.
Well, we have given him two baths in the past week, and applied Hartz flea cream (the stuff that's like Advantage, but Hartz is available over the counter.) I looked on Inky last night and I still see several fleas.
I know I need to treat both the house and the cat, but it'll be tough since I have many pets which are reptiles and I do not want to kill them along with the fleas! Any advice? I plan on using those "bug bombs" because they were effective for me years ago before we got reptiles. Now I guess I'll just have to move my reps to a friend's house while treating. Any advice would be appreciated! Here's a piccy of Inky.

Hi,
Well the first thing you need to do is not use Hartz again. It has caused illness and death in many kitties.
You can order frontline and advantage online with out a prescription. There are a lot of sites out there. Try a google search and compare prices. A couple names are pet shed and healthy pets or even ebay. (of course don't reapply until after the hartz reapplication date).

For the fleas in your house try this. Buy a flea collar. Snap it and put it in your vaccuum cleaner bag. This way when you vaccuum them up it will kill them. I tried it last summer and it worked out fairly well. It might make it so you don't have to bomb.

I'm really glad someone posted this question. My little kitty, Spooky-Shadow has been so itchy lately and she stratches herself until she bleeds in some places. I haven't seen any fleas on her and I've been looking carefully and often. But of course I did think fleas were a possibility and I'm in the same position with having so many reptiles that I wouldn't be able to flea bomb. That flea collar idea is great! For me though, I have a badless vaccuum, so put the collar right in the center?

Go for it! If she doesn't have any fleas, she might have an allergy to something in the house or to her food.Maybe a vet visit is called for. I would try frontlining her for one month. If that doesn't clear up the itching then start by slowing changing her food. or maybe even the detergent you wash your cloths with.
