Coughing cat...

Vladimir Oct 21, 2004 08:57 AM

Trixie is 8 years old, and she coughs since she was 1,5-2 years old. sometimes its few times a week, sometimes its few times a day. Sometimes I can hear something like liquid from her lungs, during coughing.
After coughing (20-50 seconds) she is fine and ready to play.
2 different vets suggested allergy, and that anti-allergic drug does make her stop coughing for 1 day.
Another vet suggested that its may be somekinda heart problem, infection?

What do I want to ask, do u think we should medicate her every day (she doesn't enjoy it at all) or let her cough.
May be there are something else?

A cough can indicate a wide range of problems from feline asthma to heart murmers. I am surprised that you haven't had a vet who seemed to be willing to track the cause down a little better.

I would certainly try the meds suggested, but if they don't improve the condition then you need to try another vet! Perhaps there is a feline-only vet in your area, or even a veterinary pulmanologist or cardiologist you could consult. Good luck!

I wouldn't be surprised if your cat has asthma. I'm surprised that your vet hasn't done chest x-rays to rule it out. Here is an excellent website with information about asthma: www.fritzthebrave.com

My cat has asthma and is treated with inhaled medications. This is a wonderful alternative to giving a cat prednisone every day.

Best to you and your cat.
