sick cat

jalexa May 01, 2005 07:41 PM

My cat is sick. She is a siamese that I have had for about six years now.
About a week ago she began wheezing and I could tell she had fluid on her lungs.
For three days in a row she has had a seizure. She looked dead and her tongue turned blue. Earlier today I took her to the vet at Petsmart. I am not working so I could pay for a visit and could buy medications, but I can't go the whole xray, animal hospital route. I told the receptionist that I would have to know what the charges would be before treatment. She told me if I wasn't willing to pay the $125 for xray's and the $90 for the blood work that I might as well not have the animal seen by a vet. So I left. Mad, but I didn't see that I had a choice.
I think Jasimine is dying. She has always been a thin cat. She may either have cat flu, a congenital heart defect that is just causing problems, or some disease like cancer or leukemia.
She has symptoms of being poisoned. I once put cat flea powder on one of my other cats and the cat had a reaction to the stuff and this cats symptoms are much like that. I quickly put other cat that was having a reaction to flea medication in a carrier and doused her with water. That was a while back and she recovered quickly. While the siamese is having symptoms like that, frothing at the mouth and showing symptoms of respiratory distress and actully seizing, if it were some kind of environmental poison she should still be sick after 4 days.

I have put the sick cat in a carrier and I put a heat pad on her. I mixed up some egg yolk and corn syrup with a little water and salt. I was giving her a tablespoon every hour. But just a few minutes ago I thought she had died. She flopped around a few times and then went limp and was still for a while. I started tapping her on her back and sides and she recovered again. So this time she didn't die. But it is just a matter of time. Now I know where the expression 9 lives comes from. She has appeared to be dead each time she has had the siezur.

I am beside myself, if anyone has any suggestions I sure would appreciate the advice. I wish I knew of something else to try.

Thanks, Jalexa

The only thing you can do is see a vet. Either for a diagnosis and treatment or for euthanasia. It is really not fair to your cat to let her suffer without trying to help her.

Hi,
Yes I agree. It is 7:30 my time. I am going to find a vet this morning as soon as their offices open. I am hoping to locate someone who will treat her for less than $100, actally, I would pay more than $100 even tho I am not working right now.
What I feel that I need to find is an animal doctor who doesn't blackmail with the extremes of euthenasia or animal hospital, expensive x-rays, and exotic expensive diagnositic procedures.
In answer to the cat deserving to be taken to the vet...I am sure that veterinians like medical doctor do as much harm as they do good.
Even though I am biting the bullet and taking her to a vet is with great reservation that I do this. I am a registered nurse. As idealistic as it may seem it is just not "life" for us animals to escape pain and death. There is pain when we are born and the pain of sickness and then the pain of death. Both veterinians and medical doctors and modern medicine is held up to be "the answer" for sickness, suffering and death. I don't believe it and I don't think there is a silver bullet for my cat or for us humans. If the pain is bad enough there is nothing that will eradicate it short of death. I do not believe in euthenasia for cats, dogs or people. Why kill if there is going to be death. why this insatiable desire to control. Murder is murder even in the name of good. An animal can be helped with medicine and medical procedure for the most part only if the body already hold the capacity for curing itself. When Jasmine dies it will not be because she didn't get to the vet in time. The reason medical doctors and small animal doctors charge such ridiculous fees is because we have brainwashed into believing they hold the keys to the kingdom of life and we believe it. It aint so.
Because my skinny little siamese cat has had the life force to survive for 5 days with what is apparently a potentially fatal disorder or disease I am taking her to get help. What I expect from the vet is any potential supportive treatments available. He or she does not have to do xrays, bloodwork, or cut her open to see that she is sick. Knowing what is wrong with her is not going to make any difference. But giving her a steroid or an antibiotic may give her body the boost and energy it needs to to either die or get better.

Hello:
I found a compassionate vet. He checked Jasmine out and confirmed by fears that she had no problem that could be easily fixed. In fact she was in the process of dying. He checked to make sure there was no obstruction or infection. He said that she most probably had a lung tumor or cancer. She collapsed while he was treating her and he explained that it was not a seizure, her brain wasn't getting oxygen.
They put her to sleep and only charged me the office fee of $22. They insisted that I need to do this.
I called the office later and thanked the nurse.
My unemployment was planned because I am finishing up a degree program. I will be working again soon. I have other animals and I definitely plan to use this vet for any of my future needs. I put a priority on the compassionate and caring attitude more than the cost.
It was extremely hard to let her go and I have been upset and crying for most of the day.
I am going to resist the temptation to replace her, she is irreplacible. I have two other cats a tortise shell domestic short hair and a persian. I'll just spend more time with them. The persian is a lot of work because his hair is so long. I think I can tell that they miss Jasmine.

Thanks for replying to my post.

I am very sorry about Jasmine. You did the right thing for her, and I'm glad you found such a wonderful vet who really looked at her and gave an honest opinion! You should definitely show your appreciation by patronizing this vet.

Your other kitties probably miss Jasmine as much as you do and it is good for them (and you) to take time to groom and spend time with them. You will all benefit from this!

Again, my deepest sympathies about your loss.
