HELP - my cat fell in a container of used auto oil

revjan May 06, 2005 06:28 PM

I have bathede him 3 times in Dawn to remove oil. Some is still there and he licks it. Will this make him sick? What should I do?

Call your vet. The oil can make him very ill. Your vet may tell you to keep bathing until you get it all out, or s/he may have some other suggestions.

If you can't get a hold of the vet this weekend. I would buy one of those e-collars so he can't lick himself.

Hi,

Motor oil is toxic to cats, especially used oil. Please either call your regular vet for advice, or if that isn't possible on the weekend, call an emergency vet.

Cats also absorb toxins through the skin, they don't necessarily have to swallow them.

I'll keep your kitty in my thoughts and prayers.

thank you all. I did call the vet and he said, "the kind of oil we use is not toxic to him but will give him diareha if he licks much of it. He siad we needed to continue bathing him with Dawn." So I had my husband stand in the back yard in a pair of shiorts holding "Pete." and while he held I took lathered washcloths and washed pete one leg/part at a time. that seem to be the least tramatic bath style for him and we got about 98% of it off of him.
so thank you all for the help.
