lump on kitten's neck

laurasly Sep 11, 2005 11:18 AM

One of my children's cat's kittens has a lump/growth under his chin---there is a black hole in the center about the size of a pencil eraser---the lump is about an inch in size. I am about 2 hours away and my ex husband will not take the kitten to the vet---I won't be back to take him until next week. It does not seem to bother the kitten and he plays and eats fine. Although my son did say it was starting to bleed now. The kittens are 7 weeks old.

Any advice or thoughts or ointments that could help until I get home?

Laura

Hi Laura,

This sounds like something that cannot wait until next week. Please find someone who is willing to take this kitten to the vet. It is never a good idea to try to treat something like this on your own. Many medications that are helpful to us are toxic to cats, even something like an ointment.

My guess is that this lump is an abscess. If this is true, and it isn't treated ASAP, the kitten may become seriously ill. It's just not worth taking that risk. A young kitten can become ill very quickly.

BTW, all of these babies need to be started on their vaccinations. If this hasn't happened yet, that is another thing that cannot wait. A kitten with distemper or severe URI is a very sad thing.

Hi Laura, I agree with AshleyElla. This kitten needs to be seen ASAP! An inch sized abcess (probably) under a 7 weeks old chin - that is huge! She can get severely infected when this gets into her blood stream. If it is open and wet, bacteria can spread and the other kittens can get infections as well. Please don't take chances and try to find someone willing to drive you, or try and find a vet who does house calls. Call around. Good luck!
