Here's a wierd one!

My cat has double fangs! Never seen anything like it. Rascal is a 6 month old Siamese mix (looks for all the world like an Oriental shorthair)I got from the shelter 3 months ago. His baby teeth were normal.

Recently when he was on my lap he gave a big yawn and somthing about his mouth struck me as odd, I took a closer look and sure enoth, the top 2 fang teeth are doubled! 2 teeth growing out of the one space! The molars look okay although it looks like they are still coming in, and the little teeth in the front are all there in the normal amount.

I am taking him to the vet to be checked out on Monday, but he doesn't seem to be bothered and eats okay. (My gut feeling is that because of his long Siamese-type nose he should have room for the extras).

Anyone else heard of such a thing?

Hi! Gotta love your name, because we share it!

Anyhow, I have heard of cats who will have a row of double teeth for a while - it is the adult teeth coming in and the baby teeth are not gone yet. Hopefully this is what is happening here.

You are wise to make an appointment with the vet to be sure all is OK - extra permanent teeth could lead to a lot of trouble on down the line and a full evaulation is needed to be sure this doesn't happen.

Good luck to you and the cat! Let us know what the vet says!

Hi There,

This is actually not unusual in a 6 month old cat. It does look very odd, though, especially if you haven't seen it before! If the "baby fangs" don't fall out by themselves, they may have to be removed by your vet. They usually come out easily. You may end up finding the baby teeth around the house, or, most likely, your kitty will swallow them.

The fangs are the last of the adult teeth to come in.

Sure enough the vet said that it was his baby teeth being displaced. He just said that it was a bit unusual that the teeth should both be the same length befoe the baby teeth budged. In the couple of days since the vet visit the second teeth have disappeared.

I will be on the lookout for stray teeth on the carpet!
