HELP! Vet suspects serious health problem!!!!!

knyghtmist Nov 14, 2005 02:54 PM

Hi

On Saturday I got up and my cat, Briscoe, was his usual rambunctious self. We played he ate - life was good. I had a few errands to run and left to attend to them. When I returned Briscoe was very lethargic and by the evening he was vomiting clear liquid with white foam looking stuff on top. I took him to the vet first thing on Sunday and they ran a full physical, CBC, feline AIDS/leukemia, and a slew of other tests.

Briscoe had a fever of 105!

They gave him a shot for vomiting and an antibiotic shot as well as a pack of pills for me to give him over the next 7 days (also antibiotics).

I called the vet today and he said that his pancreas enzymes were high and asked if he had been eating today - I said no that he has mainly been lying down and resting and he said that we need the cancer results and he may need to be hospitalized and have an IV hooked into him...

Briscoe was fine on Saturday - I just don’t understand how something like this can happen so quickly! I love him so much - does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Any thoughts are greatly apprechiated!

I am so sorry about Briscoe. It does seem strange that he would get so suddenly ill - going from rambunctious to very lethargic. However, pancreatitis can suddenly occur in humans and perhaps this is the same with cats, and this is what is troubling Briscoe.

Hopefully you will get to the bottom of this and get a diagnosis and treatment very soon! If he is not eating he will need an IV soon if his pancreas is involved. Again, I am not familiar with feline pancreas problems, but I do know that humans are given an IV to relieve the digestive system.

Best wishes to you and your cat. Keep us posted.

Hi,

I am sorry that Briscoe is so ill.

Cats tend to hide the way they really feel so there is a possibility that Briscoe might have been a little under the weather until he got really sick. This can cause cats to appear to become ill suddenly.

The most important thing, of course, is doing the best for Briscoe. I know IV fluids sound scary, but cats tolerate the catheter and fluids well and it also gives the vet the ability to easily administer IV drugs. The fluids will also help to bring down Briscoe's elevated numbers, which will help him to feel better.

Which "cancer tests" have been run? Do you know when you will have the results?

Please keep us updated on how Briscoe does.

Regards,
PHKitkat
