can I put my male in a.....

uropat Oct 14, 2003 01:55 AM

I got a male leo 8 days ago, and have not noticed him eating. I can not be shure that he is eating because he lives wiht a female that is a pig. is it okay to seperate him into a different cage without heat at night so I can see if he is eating? A quick reply would be great. (btw, I have checked him out, no smeared fecies, no black spot in stomach, no MBD.)

I wouldn't put him in a cage without heat, not even for a night. That could further slow his appetite, and if he does eat, he needs the heat to digest.

I used to pretty much feed mine by hand to make sure they all ate. It's easy with mealies. That way I could keep the piggies and the hesitant eaters together.

Were they bought together, or was he put in with a female that he didn't already know?

Is he smaller than she is?

If you can't feed them by hand, or otherwise make sure he's eating, you might need to separate them, but not without heat.

It would have been easy to determine if he was eating if he was put in a quarantine situation as recommended for three months!!!! You cannot even trust that the big name breeders are totally clean. I lost a very expensive male I was trying to prove genetics on with a female I bought from a big name breeder. She was supposed to be cycling and I wanted to try to prove it this year. Well, a month later he is dead!!! My fault for rushing, but it goes to illustrate the ABSOLUTE need for this.

As far as moving him away for a short time ( an hour or so at the most) to see if he eats, go for it.

Too late to quarantine now. Keep an eye out for problems.

I got them both from the same breeder and they were apparently kept together.

But what was the ammount of time between aquisitions? Things can change rapidly, especially if much time at all has passed.

Good luck and I hope you can figure out if he is eating.
