Kitten had surgery, now bro. cat won't accept him

creablac Dec 16, 2005 07:44 PM

I own 2 brother kittens, each 3 months old. Somehow, while I was away from home, one kitten(Blackie) broke his back leg. He needed immediate surgery. Now, after only 3 days of being away at the vet, the brother (Cream) will not have anything to do with Blackie. He snarls and hisses with his ears slicked back. Im scared their going to get in a fight, so Ive kept them separated, but my question is WHY? Is it because Cream realizes that Blackie is injured or b/c he enjoyed the x-tra attention by himself? Please Help!!?!

Probably the biggest factor is that Blackie smells different and maybe looks different than he did. Cream probably doesn't fully recognize him. Rub Cream with a towel and then rub Blackie, then rub Cream again to exchange scents. Keep the kittens separated for a day or so and let them sniff each other under a door. You could also try putting Cream in a carrier and let Blackie sniff around it, then put Blackie in a carrier and let Cream sniff around it. In a couple of days if Blackie is able to play then use a kitty wand and see if they will both play with it in the same room.

They will more than likely be good friends once again, as long as you don't force the issue right now.

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!

This is pretty normal, I wouldn't worry at all.

I have two brother cats from the same litter that are now 14 years old. They are inseperable.

Whenever one goes to the vet without the other, when they get back together, I have a few hours of hissyness and growls, primarily due to smells.

Last year, Pookey had to have his rear leg amputated due to cancer (from a rabies shot). Stanley avoided him for the better part of a week. He was very careful around him and stayed clear of him. They didn't get back to normal for about two weeks. Pookey needed a lot of care and I think Stanley sensed that. There was some light hissing, but primarily, they kept their distance for several days...

What your two are going thru sounds perfectly normal. Give it a few days, at most, and they'll be back to normal.
