4 mo. old kitten with leaky butt

jburbank Dec 30, 2005 12:23 AM

my kitty doesn't have diarrhea - BUT, in between bowel movements, he leaks a little bit of liquidy or soft stool. Anywhere he sits, he leaves a little spot. I've had him worked up by the vet, he doesn't know what it is, except that he has a "loose sphincter." He's been dewormed, he has a good appetite and is pretty active and playful, but just has this messy problem. Has anyone else run across this? Any suggestions?

Poor baby. Sad to say this is common among manx and other tailess cats. Does he have a full tail or only a stub?

This will probably require invasive treatment - like surgery - to resolve. Your best bet is to seek out a second opinion, perhaps from a veterinary school if you have one close by, or a feline specialist. Your vet is more than likely well-meaning, but probably has not encountered this situation.

Best wishes to you and the kitten!

No, he's not a manx - has a full tail. I had him neutered last week - they thought it would be a crypt neuter because there weren't any external testicles, but when they did an incision and went internally to do the neuter, thinking the testicles would be inside, they weren't there - the vet said he'd never seen anything like it, there were definite abnormalities, he doesn't know if what he removed was testicles or pieces of tissue or what. This kitty's parents were most likely brother and sister - this is what inbreeding does for you! Sad. But I'm not giving up on this little guy yet because he is the sweetest cat I've ever come across. THx for the input --
