stray kitten with blood in stool

carmeny Feb 23, 2006 04:05 PM

We live on an acreage not far from town and about 2 months ago a "drop off" appeared in our yard. I think he is a drop off because he is quite tame and not one of our neighbor's cats. Anyway, he lives outside with my other cats but comes in every afternoon for playtime. He was using the litterbox today and I went in right after he was done just to make sure everything
"looks" okay. I scooped up his poop and noticed there was tiny specks of blood in it. Otherwise it appeared normal and did not smell unusual. It is a male about 6-7 months old. Since he came to us out of the blue, I have no idea if he has been looked at by a vet (I am assuming not). He is very active, very social and eats extremely well. He did not strain while going to the bathroom and is not tender anywhere in his lower abdomin.

Does anyone have any idea what this may be. Worms? Something more serious?

Thank you for any advice!

Hi There,

A small amount of blood in the stool is common in cats and most often isn't an indication of something serious. However, this is an outdoor kitty, and therefore he is at high risk for various parasites, including worms. The next time you have the chance, I would get a stool sample from the kitty and take it into the vet for microscopic examination. I would also take the kitten in for a general exam, if possible.

He isn't really a stray if you are taking care of him, and you want to make sure he is in good health, especially since he is spending time with the other cats. Some parasites spread like crazy among cats.

He will be going to the vet very soon for checkup, shots and neutering along with the 2 others! He came as a stray but will be staying. I will keep an eye on his poop for a couple days and see if it clears up, if not off to the vet we will go! I had looked after some orphaned baby kittens in the summer and they too had a bit of blood for a couple days that cleared up. So I am hoping Lil Punks does too. I am just glad he ended up with us instead of someone who doesn't care.
