Questions about my Chartreux

jinxieisis Jun 25, 2006 10:43 PM

Hi.

I have an 8 month Chartreux and I was wondering a couple of things about her. I just recently found out what breed she was and have been looking up information about her. She doesn't keep herself "clean" like most cats do, so I bathe her and my orange tabby every 1-2 weeks. I haven't read anywhere that I shouldn't bathe her, but I did read on a couple of sites that I shouldn't brush her because of her coat. She sheds a lot but she also seems to really enjoy being brushed. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to, so I dont know if I should continue or cease doing this.

Petsmart's website recommends brushing her 2 times a week, however other websites I have visited dealing with her breed have told me that I shouldn't. Seeing as how much she sheds and how much she enjoys it, should I continue brushing her? It doesn't seem to hurt her in any bit possible.. she actually will walk up to the brush for me.

And since I shouldn't be brushing her, according to these websites, should I be bathing her? Thank you in advance for your help.

Amy

I don't know a lot about the Chartreux breed, but it seems to me that any cat would benefit by brushing, especially since it seems to be so enjoyable. Cats will normally "groom" their friends which is like a good brushing. I hope that by making this a hot topic someone will be able to answer you.

Hi,

I would continue the brushing. Chances are that she isn't a Chartreux anyway, unless she originally came from a breeder. They aren't common cats.

I don't recommend bathing cats unless it's really necessary, or they are going to a show. Unless your cats get totally filthy within a couple of weeks, there is no need. I can't even remember the last time I bathed one of my cats, and I have 10.

Take Care,

I've attached an image of her. She looks identical to the cats I saw when I did a google image search of Chartreux.. but I may be wrong.

It was the best picture I could get of her. She's pure grey (blue) and has the orange/gold eyes. In addition, she has the rounded face of the Chartreux.

I didnt get her from a breeder, however... so you may be right.

As for bathing, I could probably cut down on it for them... they tend to start to smell after about a week of no bath, but they're inside cats so they aren't getting extremely dirty.

She sure is a beautiful girl, whether she is a mix or a purebred! Could even be a Chartreux mix......

She is very pretty indeed. I cannot imagine a cat who doesn't benefit by combing and or brushing! I would recommend you actually finding a reliable Chartreux group via Yahoo and discussing with them the drawbacks of grooming.

Good luck!

I would like to thank you both for your input and kind words about Isis. She truly means the world to me and I want to look out for her the best way I can. In addition, I have joined two Yahoo groups and I will hopefully find out for sure if she is in fact a Chartreux. Thank you again for your time!

I also have a cat that looks very much like yours. She was a feral rescue, but I always wonder if she could have Chartreux in her. She also sheds alot and LOVES to be brushed. I do it every 2-3 days and no harm done, it seems. Have never had to bathe her.
