Cat coughing & hacking

sassqueen316 Aug 01, 2006 11:00 AM

I have a cat that is a little under a year old and she has been coughing and hacking for about three weeks now. I thought she had a hairball so I bought some over the counter medicine and have been giving it to her for about two weeks now, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. She never throws up or coughs up a hairball so I don't know what's wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

There is a chance that your cat has feline asthma. Please stop giving the hairball stuff and take her in to see a vet ASAP. If she has asthma, her life may be in danger.

Hairballs do NOT cause coughing, contrary to what many believe. They do not come from the lungs, but from the GI tract.

I have an asthmatic cat that just last month needed emergency treatment to save her life. Please don't delay any further in taking your cat in, and please let us know how it goes.
