s/p nasal polyp surgery

nab219 Aug 01, 2006 07:33 PM

IT IS 5 days since polyp surgery. I want my old pre surgery Mason back . Right now I am doubting if I would put him thru another surgery. He is not eating like before and won't eat dry food. He probably has pain from the surgery. He has bilateral Horners syndrome with the 3rd eye exposed so he probably can not see well. Today he sound nasally congested. I called the vet and was told to give it a few days that this is normal.

Hi,

I am so sorry that Mason doesn't seem to be doing well after his surgery. If his condition seems to be getting worse, I would take him in for an exam to make sure all is well. I do know that this type of surgery is hard on cats but they usually show improvement within the first few days.

I'll remember Mason in my prayers. Please keep us updated.

PHKitkat

I am sorry Mason is doing so poorly. Don't hesitate to take him to the vet if you are concerned. Remember that you are far more in tune to the "normal" Mason and can better tell when things are not right than the vet can!

Keep us posted. I'll keep Mason in my thoughts and prayers!

Thanks for the reply. i took Mason back to the vet today...his nasal congestion was worse, he was not eating and was lethargic.
He had a temperature of 104.5 and the drs felt he has a URI. They place a iv catheter for the dehydration , gave iv antibiotic and a one time dose of a "cat tylenol which is news to me". I called for a update and his temp was down but he is not eating. I still feel so guilty about allowing this surgery.
Thanks for the advice...you guys are a blessing.

I am so sorry Mason is still struggling to get well. I hope that they can help him. Don't feel guilty - there was no way to anticipate this outcome before surgery and you were trying to do the best for your furbaby!

MASON is still not doing well. HE REMAINS AT THE VET and continued to spike a fever so they put him on IV antibiotics. He is still refusing to eat so he is on a appetite stimulant. He has alot of nasal congestion. My theory is that the nasal polyp surgery stirred up something dormant in the nose. I am afraid he will not survive. I am so sorry that I put him thru this.

I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT YESTERDAY THE VET WAS CONCERNED ABOUT HOW LONG MASON HAD NOT EATEN. I KNOW IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH LIVER DAMAGE. HAVE YOU HEARD OF THIS? THE VET IS SUPPOSED TO CALL ME SOON. MASON IS AT THE VET SPECIALIST 60 MILES AWAY BUT I WILL GO UP TODAY TO BRING FOOD THAT I KNOW HE LIKED.

I am so very sorry that Mason is not doing better. I am sure you must be frantic. Hopefully he will start eating soon; if not he is well-cared for and will be fed intraveneously if needed. Sending him lots of Cat Hobbyist ***GLOW***! Keep us posted!

Hi,

I am so sorry that Mason isn't improving. I'll continue to keep both of you in my prayers.

Cats that stop eating are at risk of developing hepatic lipidosis, also known as fatty liver disease. This is very serious, and can be fatal, even if treated. For this reason, a cat that stops eating for more than 2 - 3 days needs to be force-fed. Often these kitties need a feeding tube for a period of time.

If your vet is not force-feeding Mason, please take him somewhere else. There is nothing wrong with trying appetite stimulents, but if they don't work something further needs to be done.

Please keep us updated.

PHKitkat

Yes Mason has been force fed since Saturday but started with vomitting so they stopped feeds and are giving IV fluid. They are supposed to retry force feeds today. HAS ANYONE FORCE FED AT HOME?

Mason came home toay. The vet thinks he had a virus although he is on 2 antibiotics. The vet thinks he had this virus as a kitten and still has the virus in a dormant state. The virus possibly was reactivated with stress, similar to people with Herpes cold sores etc. His blood work showed an elevate eosinophil count so he was dewormed. He looks good, very active and checking out the house for changes. He did eat a little but will not touch dry food. He is very thin. Does anyone know of a high calorie cat food to gain weight.? I normally give a better quality cat food but have bought some junk food types also hoping he will gain weight. Of course my other 3 love the junk food.

Hi There,

It's good to hear that Mason is home!

Remember, antibiotics are not effective against virusus, only bacterial infections. It sounds like the vet thinks Mason has feline herpes. Please ask the vet about giving him Lysine, 1/4 of a 500mg tablet, twice daily. It is very effective against the herpes virus. If your vet has Interferon available, it would also be helpful as it is an anti-viral.

I would feed Mason kitten food if he will eat it. The extra protein and fat might help him to gain some weight. But anything at all he will eat is ok. The important thing is to get him eating and keep him eating. If you have to force-feed Mason, it's not bad if you use a liquified food (put through a blender) and feed with a syringe. Hills A/D is excellent for this, with a little water added. Also, baby food can be force fed by syringe right out of the jar. An appetite stimulent may also be helpful with Mason.

Please keep us updated on how Mason does. I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

PHKitkat

My regular vet gave me Science diet A/D and Waltams skin and coat ..both he would not eat. I also got some nutrecal which I put on his paw and then he licks off. Mason has been eating baby food and is eating other cat foods better. i am pleased with his eating. lysine is a good idea. I had gotten some made for cats in that malt form which he did not like. Is it safe to use the lysine available at my food store vitamin aisle?

Hi There,

It's very good to hear that Mason is eating better!

Yes, you can use the Lysine found in any pharmacy. Buy the 500mg tablets, and give 1/4 tablet daily twice daily. The tablets crush very easily so I usually mix it with food, rather than just give it orally. The back of a spoon works well as a crusher.

My herpes kitty, Whispurr, does very well on Lysine. I get hers from Walmart because the price is so good

Thanks for the update on Mason!

PHKitkat
