Butt muscles don't work!!! Please Help!

babaluu Aug 08, 2006 08:27 PM

I have a 6 mo old male kitty that can't control his butt muscles. He does his major poop in the litter box but little pebbles of poop fall out of his bum all day. He is on medication that helped but he still does it. The vet said he is as good as he is going to get. I have him in the tiled bathroom so the messes are easier to clean up. I have small children and can't have poop all over. He is declawed so I don't think I could have him be outside. Does anyone know anything else I can try or will I have to give him back the the shelter???
Please Help!!! We love little Sammy!!

Hi,

The problem here is actually with the anal sphincter, and I think that consulting with another vet would be a good idea. You may actually be looking at having surgery done......it all depends on why Sammy is having fecal incontinence in the first place. If you could take him to a feline specialist, that would be ideal. Such a doctor may be aware of other treatment options.

Please don't put Sammy outside. It would not be fair to him and there are too many dangers, especially with him being declawed.

Thanks for responding PHKitKat...I have already gone to 2 different vets and the vet I am currently taking Sammy to has consulted with an animal neurologist in Colorado and he said the same thing. The problem is neurological...the brain isn't telling the bum to tighten. He did some tests and Sammy has no reflexes down there to tighten when he should. The vet also said that in his 22 years of being a vet he has only seen this in 4 cats. Do you have any other suggestions for me to try?? I don't want to give up on him.

Thanks!!!

This is just off the top of my head, but sometimes I think people use diapers on their cats. Would that help?

Good luck!!
